The Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) hearing test is a neurophysiological technique used to diagnose retrocochlear lessons and assess hearing threshold in children with delayed speech and hearing loss. An electrophysiological test procedure known as the BERA hearing test facilitates the identification and study of electrical potentials generated at different levels of the auditory system, ranging from the cochlea to the cortex. While there are numerous pure tones and impedance audiometric tests specifically made to distinguish between cochlear and retrocochlear hearing loss, BERA is the most sensitive and accurate method for identifying lesions in the brainstem's auditory pathway and VIII nerve, particularly in adults. It is also the least expensive way to diagnose retrocochlear lesions and is non-invasive, easily recordable, unaffected by age, sedation, or anaesthesia. The child's skin is extremely sensitive from the start, so using bulky equipment and testing to detect hearing loss is not feasible.
