By using an objective test called BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry), one can ascertain how electrical waves are transmitted from the eighth cranial nerve to the brainstem in response to clicking noises that are played into one's ear. Sound enters the outer ear canal and activates the eardrum once it gets there. Three little bone fragments in the eardrum the malleus, incus, and stapes transmit vibrations to the inner ear. The inner ear contains the vestibular portion, which is used for balance maintenance, and the cochlear, which is involved in listening. The vestibulocochlear nerve also referred to as the eighth cranial nerve, is responsible for carrying auditory and balance impulses from the inner ear to the brainstem, an important part of the brain.
