Pure Tone Audiometry Test

Both the central and peripheral auditory systems are involved in this measurement. Pure-tone thresholds (PTTs) represent the lowest sound level that a person can hear at least half the time. On an audiogram, a graph that shows intensity as a function of frequency, and hearing sensitivity is plotted. Normal hearing: Hearing is within normal bounds at this level. Mild hearing loss (26–40 dB): This type of loss can lead to increased listening efforts, difficulty blocking out background noise, and inattention. This level of loss may prevent patients from hearing soft speech. After spending a lot of time listening, kids could get tired. Moderate hearing loss (41–55 dB): This level of hearing loss can have an impact on self-esteem, peer interaction, language development, syntax, and articulation. Some patients struggle to hear some conversational speech due to this level of loss. Moderate-severe hearing loss (56–70 dB): This type of hearing loss can make speech more difficult to understand and less comprehensible. Most speech at the conversational level is not audible to patients with this level of loss.
