The outer, middle, and inner ear are the three components that make up your ear. The OAE test is used to assess the cochlea, or inner ear, for function. Otoacoustic emissions, or OAEs, are measured by it. The inner ear produces these sounds in response to auditory stimuli. The inner ear contains hair cells that vibrate in response to sound. A very faint sound is produced by the vibration, and it reverberates back into the middle ear. The OAE that is being measured is this sound. You will make OAEs if your hearing is normal. You won't be able to make these extremely quiet sounds if your hearing loss is more than 25–30 dB. Additionally, this test can reveal whether your middle or outer ear is blocked. No sound will be able to reach the inner ear if there is a blockage. This implies that there won't be any residual noises or vibrations. You get a tiny earphone, or probe, inserted. The probe measures the sounds that return after inserting itself into your ear. During the test, there is nothing you need to say or do. The results are displayed on the monitor screen for the test taker to see.
